The Quiet Things We've Learned to Fear

After looking at my images collected from my walk through the city, I noticed many of my clips and stills shared little, to nothing in common. The themes were scattered and I found little color similarities or common images throughout. Initially, I was confused as to where I could go with such dynamic subject matter and then was given the idea of a mini-narrative.

With such sporadic clips, I set out to portray the visual of a man running through the woods, revealing memories and images while he engages in an exasperating chase. I believe, while running, these images from his memory creep back into his head but despite his best efforts to suppress them, in order to keep focuses, they still continue to haunt him. While the images may seem harmless when looked at alone, I think on closer inspection of ourselves we would find that things we fear, are in some cases, not frightening at all. In the last portion of the piece, the point of view is switched to reveal the character and what it is he's chasing.

Rough Clip Sound 2

This clip also used sound in an attempt to create a mechanical idea to the bits of nature we pass everyday. I tried to capture two completely different scenes that seemed to run together with the cuts. At some point the two different images drift in opposite directions but still have some similarities. In the end, the camera pans both images back to the middle. I wanted to work with match cutting in this clip in the case I use some match on action for my final piece.

Rough Clip Sound 1

With my first sound clip I tried creating a grotesque and mechanical look to nature and in this case, water. The sound edits are some of my first attempts at trying to manipulate noises into something completely different than the original. While I don't plan on making a statement on pollution and nature with my final clip, I felt a statement could be made considering the images I had for a rough sketch.

Rough Clip 2 (Mother Nature)

This is the first bit of visual media I've edited in my short career. This simply was a rough draft to work with my editing program and compile together some of my collected images. I enjoy some of these images individually but as a whole there was no artistic aim. I wanted to be able to understand my editing program and simply put together a compilation of some unique images I found.

Rough Clip 1 (Pigeon Hunting)

This edit is a mix of a larger clip where I ran through the woods downtown on Water Street. I tried to capture the idea of being chased and running from birds. My attempt is to add sound to this edit to make it more comical. Unfortunately, I could not find enough images of the human form. At this point in my development, I decided to work with what images I had which dealt with trees, plants, and vines.

Strategy, or Destiny? (Probably just strategy)

My first Drift ended in Downtown Milwaukee, and because of the lack of time, I felt as if I missed out on some good opportunities. So, I chose to go back to where Drift 1 ended and continue Drift 2 from there. The strategy this time around, going whichever the way the wind took me. In more detail, at every second intersection I felt where the wind was blowing and followed it in that direction. There were three opportunities that wouldn't fit under the strategy.

1. If I reached a T-intersection and the wind blew me in a way that wasn't possible, I would flip a coin to determine.

2. If the wind was not blowing when I approached an intersection, I would wait, or flip a coin if waiting got too long.

3. If the wind blew me backwards, I would ignore it and go forwards.

My strategy for image capturing was heavy on nature. However, I would only film or capture nature and natural elements that were surrounded by the city element. Another strategy I adapted was to find pictures of people or images of the human form.
